Nokia to Significantly Improve Symbian OS in 2011

Symbian OSNokia is to introduce around five major updates of Symbian’s interface and function during 2011, ComputerWorld reported on Tuesday.

News of this imminent development emerged at a presentation delivered by Nokia’s Senior Manager, Mr. Gunther Kottzieper, at the International Mobile Conference in Beijing. The first update of Symbian is scheduled for the first quarter of 2011 and will contain about 50 modifications, mainly centred around refining the interface.

Symbian’s main screen is to be updated by October next year. The system will also receive a new browser with HTML5 support and a more streamlined software update system.

Nokia’s representative also spoke about the planned integration of new firmware solutions into Nokia’s smartphones. They will be equipped with a 1 GHz processor and a more powerful video card. By the end of 2011 (or at the beginning of 2012) models with 2-nuclei processors will also appear.

Gartner agency reports that in the 3rd quarter of 2010 Nokia still retains first place in the world in terms of smartphone sales (28.2 % of the market) with Symbian, the most popular smartphone OS (36.6 % of the market). However, these figures are considerably worse than the previous ones: in the 3rd quarter of the previous year Nokia sold 36.7 % of all the world’s smartphones, with Symbian being used in 44.6 % of smartphones.

Many experts link the company’s problems with Symbian’s technological underdevelopment and complicated development of apps for it. To eliminate this drawback, Nokia took control over the development of this platform (previously, Symbian was developed by non-commercial organization, the Symbian Foundation).

IDC: Android to Become Leader among Mobile OS in Europe

android-marketIn 2011, Android-based smartphones sales’ volumes will overtake those of Symbian based devices 2011 in Western Europe, according to forecasted reports by the IDC Research Company.

Analysts report that in the 3rd quarter of the current year, Android became the third popular OS in Western Europe with a market share of 23 %. Symbian, which runs on Nokia, ranked in both 1st and 2nd place (34%); and Apple (24%). Sales dynamics within the Western European smartphone market show a noticeable shrinking of Symbian shares and iOS driven devices along with simultaneous growth in Android OS shares (from 4% last year to 16% by the third quarter of 2010).

In 2011, Android is set to overtake Symbian and iOS in popularity in Western Europe, reports analyst Francisco Jeronimo in his interview to Bloomberg.

As of 2009, more than half of the Western European market was occupied by Symbian devices, yet their share went considerably down three quarters into the current year. The iPhone enjoys some insignificant growth. Apple smartphones’ share equaled 21% in 2009 and 23 % during the nine months of 2010.

Blackberry OS produced by RIM has a somewhat stable position in Western Europe with 15% last year and 17% in the current year. Windows Mobile devices market share is gradually decreasing. In 2009 it equated to about 8% (higher than Android’s index at the time), three quarters into 2010 it held only 4%. However, it is worth remembering that Microsoft gave up the development of Windows Mobile in favor of Windows Phone 7 which first appeared in October.

This year Android-based devices have already conquered the US and Asian markets, having become the most popular smartphones in these regions, as reported by Nielsen and Gfk research companies. Analysts at Canalys further report that Android became 2nd popular platform for smartphones in the world in the 3rd quarter of the current year, overtaking Apple and yielding only to Symbian. Therefore, the latest data from the Western Europe confirm the global tendency. Provided the current trend is maintained, next year Android is quite likely come top of all global competition.

HTC is the most active seller of Android-based devices in Western Europe (39% of all smartphones on this platform). They are followed by Sony Ericsson (27%) and Samsung (14%). The share of the latter went up due to successful sales of Galaxy S, reports Mr. Jeronimo. Fortune reports that Samsung announced selling more than 5 million Android-based Galaxy S smartphones in October (2 million of which were sold in the US). By the end of the year Samsung expects 10-15 million devices to be sold worldwide.

Both Samsung and Sony Ericsson have given up using Symbian OS this year, which made Nokia the only major manufacturer of devices on this platform.

As expected, smartphones will take over half of all mobile sales in Western Europe in 2011 (this year’s index was 35%). The growth in the smartphone’s popularity is seen reflected in overall world trends.

Apple Releases Multitasking OS for iPhone and iPad

holyappleApple has released the update for the iOS 4.2 (which runs on the iPhone and iPad), having significantly increased the iPad’s functionality, reports the company’s website.

The new system adds those functions which are already available for the users of the iPhone and iPhone Touch, namely multitasking, grouping programs in folders, Game Center application (allows gamers to have contests with friends, keep a table of records, etc.)

Up to now, iOS 3.2.2 has been a stable iPad’s OS, which was released in August this year.

Among new functions of iOS 4.2 is AirPlay which allow users of this device to broadcast music, video and pictures on Apple TV through the Wi-Fi channel. The music stored on a gadget can also be broadcast on AirPort Express, a wireless hotspot, connected with speakers (wireless AirPlay compatible acoustic systems are soon to hit the market).

Apple Develops New Version of iPad with In-Built SIM-Card

apple-logo1The iPad tablet with an embedded SIM-Card which can be activated remotely is to hit stores either before Christmas or at the very beginning of 2011, The Sunday Telegraph reports, quoting the renowned European mobile operators.

Previously, Apple planned on implementing embedded SIM-cards in the iPhone, yet negotiations with major European operators made the company give up this intention,  according to an article published in The Sunday Telegraph. Operators warned they would stop subsidizing the iPhone which could negatively affect further sales of the device. According to Bernstein’s analyst Robin Binenstock, this step could potentially lead to an overall 12% drop in iPhone sales

Selling the iPhone through their networks, many operators currently subsidize part of the phone’s cost; i.e. they sell it for a lower price together with a long-term contract in exchange for future income from voice and data transmission services. While applying ordinary SIM-cards, mobile operators can firmly “tie” the subsidized devices to their mobile network. The embedded SIM-card makes it possible to choose an operator after purchasing the device. Operators, therefore, regard this as a possible threat to their business.

Apple believes that the use of the embedded SIM-card will allow the company to rely more on direct sales of the iPhone to consumers and exclude any third parties represented by mobile operators from the process. Opposition toward this move by mobile operators , as reported by the Financial Times, forcedApple to review its plans and implement embedded SIM-cards firstly in iPads which are often sold through retail networks without the participation of operators.

GSMA also announced their plans concerning the formulation of  a single industrial standard for embedded SIM-cards last week. It is still unclear how Apple will respond to this initiative, which potentially will impinge on the iPad manufacturer’s own plans..

Apart from the possibility of a remote selection of the operator, the use of embedded SIM-cards will allow for the access to GSM networks not only for mobile phones, netbooks and tablet computers, but also for cameras, MP 3 players, navigators and other digital equipment.

The European Commission to Invest into the Development of Symbian

symbian_osThe European Commission is to allocate 22 million EUR for the development of Symbian mobile platform. This is according to a report from the official Symbian blog Symbian being the developer of the most popular mobile operation system in the world.

It is also reported that the European Commission, leading European IT organizations, and the Symbian Fund will create the SYMBEOSE Consortium which stands for “Symbian, the Embedded Operating System for Europe”. The main objective of this organization will be to implement the projects which will raise the attractiveness of Symbian for investors and end users.

It is expected that the allocated funds will be spent on the simplification of issuing the new Symbian-based models. Symbian also want to improve the support of cloud computer technologies.

These initiatives are aimed primarily at supporting the Symbian Fund which has lately lost the support of a number of major mobile telephone manufacturers. Sony Ericsson and Samsung have recently announced the termination of the manufacture of Symbian-based new mobile phones. Only Finnish Nokia still manufactures Symbian-based smartphones.

NVIDIA Foresees the Emergence of Superphones

Badge_Tegra_3D_largeNVIDIA’s president Jen-Hsun Huang foresees the emergence of a new class of mobile phones, so-called superphones.

Mr. Huang explains that ‘superphones’ will occupy the intermediary position between traditional phones used purely for communication and minicomputers. These gadgets will be bigger than the Apple iPhone but smaller than ordinary tablet computers.

Mr. Huang says that ‘superphones’ will be able to carry out basic internet functions with a highly developed multimedia functionality. Google Android OS will serve as the platform for these devices.

Mr. Huang didn’t talk about the type of hardware that will be used.. He only noted that ARM-based processors are likely to become the “heart” of the new device. (NVIDIA’s president may have meant not a very successful platform Tegra. – I don’t understand what you mean?)

Superphones may appear on the market over the coming year, concluded Jen-Hsun Huang.

Motorola Requests to Stop Sales of Apple iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch

Motorola filed a lawsuit against Apple, blaming Steve Jobs’ empire in the illegal use of patented technologies.

Motorola claims that Apple violated around 18 patents which deal with wireless data transmission tools in WCDMA and Wi-Fi networks, antenna design, methods of information synchronization between several devices, geolocation services, wireless e-mail exchange, etc. The plaintiff also states that the above-mentioned technologies are illegally applied in the iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, several models of Apple PCs and supporting online services, namely in App Store.

Motorola also made an address to the US International Trade Commission with a request to conduct the investigation and ban the import and sales of Apple’s products because of patent violation. Additionally, the plaintiff intends to claim material compensation from Apple.
